Dangerously Low on System Resorces -Is there any way to manually change on my computer. ces'''

I have a question about the low percentage of my Windows 95 system recources which is 80%, being dangerously low. I understand that it should be set on at least 90 or 95%. Does anyone know if I can manually change that - say like we change screen names or desktop screen savers - and if so I would greatly appreciate the expierence. Would you be so kind as to email me instructions. AOL's tech. support tried but I am confused. Thank you very much and kind regards. Debbie L (debbielam5@aol.com)

Is the computer locking up or "freezing"?? If not leave it alone. you might check out the tricks and tweaks page at www.95isalive.com

Debbie,

Having 80% free resources is NOT dangerously low. In fact, it's good! You can't set
your resources. Whenever you open a program is uses a certain amount of resources.
That's the way it all works. Resources in use, have to do with the applications that
are running, etc.

Thank you Carol for your reply. Thanks also Steve. Comp. locks & freezes and now as Im working sometimes shows icons: spider, star within circle, smile face; then information on screen begins breaking up, doubles up, text jumbled with graphics looking like all little bits of color. Any ideas? Thanks for the site.

Have you run a virus scan recently. if so, then I would boot into Safe mode and then run Scandisk and then defrag.

What you describe might be caused by a virus of some sort. If you do not have any
anti-virus software installed, you can use TrendMicro's free online scanner, from
here:

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

You might also consider installing one or both of these programs: Ad-Aware and Spybot-Search
& Destroy (I use both, personally). Both of these are programs for detecting and
removing "spyware", etc., from your system. I prefer Spybot but use both for extra
assurance. You can get them from the company websites:

Ad-Aware - http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
SpyBot-Search & Destroy - http://security.kolla.de/

And finally, if you are experiencing the "Dangerously low on Resources" message,
you can try this:

From the Start menu, select "RUN" and type System.ini, then click enter.
Look for [VCACHE] on this page. If it's not there, you'll need to add it. Below
it should have two setting: MinFileCache and MaxFileCache. These control how RAM
memory is used for Virtual Cache (temp storage). Should look like this:

[vcache]
MinFileCache=4096
MaxFileCache=16384

If you have 64MB of RAM, or more, try changing your settings to the ones I provided
above. They are based on 64MB of RAM memory. The usual guidelines for these values
are calculated as follows:
MinFileCache= (Amount of installed RAM x 1024)/16
MaxFileCache= (Amount of installed RAM x 1024)/4

So, if you have 128MB of RAM...you might want to try using Min=8192/Max=32768 but
try the 64MB values first, as they may prove sufficient to solve your problem if
the cause isn't virus or spyware related.
