Win95 - Startup to blank screen

Boot up seems to progress normally but results in a blank green screen. ( I have
a feeling that the normal Desktop screen is underneath! )
Double left click or Win key brings up a dialogue box headed Tasks. File> Run application>
Browse enables most programs to be opened but not Settings or Control Box. Ctrl,
Alt, Del results in a Close Program dialogue box with only End Task or Shut Down
options.
If my memory is ok the problem arose after I got a Restore Active Desktop message,
chose yes, and then closed down normally.
Grateful for any advice on this matter.

Dear Windows 95 user,
First of all, I must ask, why do you have active desktop with Windows 95??? If you
installed the "Active Desktop" feature with Internet Explorer 4.0 you might want
to know that it may have problems because Windows 95 was not made to have an active
desktop (it runs better without one anyway) Here are a few other reasons to remedy
your problem.
1.When the blank Green screen appears, double click the left mouse button to bring
you to that dialogue box.
2. Click on File, then Run Application.
3. In the dialogue box type exactly as shown:
C:\Windows\explorer.exe
This should work!!!
Now here is what you need to do.
Go into this directory:
My Computer -> C: (or name of your hard disk) -> Windows -> System -> "Sysedit.exe"
Click on the "System.ini" window. And Makes sure that where you see "Shell=" it says
next to it Explorer.exe. It should say this "Shell= Explorer.exe"

Many thanks for your message.
Not sure about Active Desktop - I seem to have gathered it from somewhere!
Tasks>file>run application>C:\Windows\explorer.exe
gives an error message - Explorer caused an invalid page fault in module EXPLORER.EXE
at 0137:00402039.
However, I was able to get into systedit.exe by another means and it shows shell=Explorer.exe.
Any more suggestions would be very welcome.
