I would like to network a computer running windows xp with two laptops running windows 95 and share a broadband connection (adsl)? Is this possible (I've had conflicting feedback)? Ideally the laptop connections would be wireless. I've been looking at US Robotics hardware and remain somewhat confused.

Shouldn't be a problem, if whatever hardware you plug into your laptops (network card) has software support for Windows 95.

I know a wired network will work. I know because I have my XP machine hooked up to the cable modem, and a 4-port router supplies a connection to my son's windows 95c machine and a 98se machine.
