Question about 'Uninstalling Windows'

I have a question about Uninstalling Windows:

How would I install it to a clean directory? I can not find any of the uninstall files, nor is it an available selection in the add/remove programs portion of the control panel. I have already start to reinstall the 95 (on a diff 'puter) but am having a lot of trouble with that. What if I go in and delete Windows from the hard drive before I try to reinstall again? Would that work?

You can't uninstall Windows, unless you did an "upgrade" install from Windows 3.1.

Please describe what you're trying to do. Are you trying to clean the hard drive completely, and then install W95 as if the hard drive were new, or are you trying to preserve the data on the hard drive and just install a completely fresh copy of W95?

What about programs already installed on the hard drive -- are you trying to preserve them, or can they be wiped too?

This is on a computer that I just inherited from a family member and had just started to load my software. I do not care if I lose any saved info, but I did/am having trouble reinstalling all to the drivers for the hardware. The reason I started this is because I needed to install a network card on the desktop but could not find one compatible with win95. I have a win98 here from an unused gateway laptop that I did try to upgrade the desktop with (should be ok since the gateway is out of commision) but it would not let me upgrade. It was suggested that I uninstall win 95 then try to install the win98, but of course I can not find the unistall info on the hard drive, control panel, cd, nor the boot floppy. Which is when I thought if I reinstalled the 95 it would put the uninstall info back on so that I could then use it, which it has not. I do not really have the moola to go buy a new Win program and am not sure it would even upgrade now. Any suggestions would be very appreciated. Thank you

You can reformat the hard drive and then install Windows 98. You'll need the Windows 98 registration code, which should be on a sticker attached to the W98 manual that you kept.

Please e-mail me directly for detailed instructions. There's no need to bore the rest of the people in this forum with information that's either "old hat" or has been posted umpteen times already.

When you e-mail me, please tell me whether you found that registration code or not, and whether the computer with W98 already installed on it can be brought back to life briefly, to get the code off it.

Give me a hardware inventory (motherboard, video, sound, LAN card, modem, etc.) so that I can find the proper drivers for you.

I won't be able to e-mail you tomorrow (11 Nov -- not at the office that day).
