Check out CoolwebShredder here:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/cwschronicles.html

The download link is near the bottom of the discussion.

Gerry, thank you for your help, greatly appreciated. I cannot get into the spyware cite, I get a popup that I have performed an illegal operation and then booted out. I got rid of Global-Finder, but now this search engine, Coolsearch, has taken over. Is there another site or will someone respond here to help me get rid of this search engine. Thank you.

Find a friend or neighbour to do the download for you. The program will fit on a floppy.

I had the same trouble - I couldn't even get to the links people gave me to solve my problem. I was able to run SpyBot search and destroy and that helped get rid of the illegal operation messages. http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=download

If you are UNABLE to remove coolsearch ( I just got the thing thats why im here looking) but anyway couple other ways may help if you still have it and cannot remove it... go to SYSTEM CONFIGURATION UTILITY and click STARTUP see if you can find COOL SEARCH there and if you do UNCHECK THE BOX and then APPLY or, when you put your windows up and coolsearch comes up - in the address box type in what home page you want and then when you are there go to TOOLS and then INTERNET OPTIONS and if the address in the box is the one you want click the tab USE CURRENT either of these may be of some help to you

I am having the same trouble since some days. Even though I have Zone Alarm on my computer it is not able to stop all intrusions of coolsearch-related sites (like luckysearch, slotch, websearch, etc). I recognized that every time coolsearch is approaching (I see red peaks in DU meter) a new cookie appears at C:\windows\cookies. It is mostly ....@audit.median.txt. After deleting it appears again. I read out the numbers of the computer (195.56.51.115) and put it into the refused cookies box at IE->Tools->Settings. I built up a refused internet sites box as well. You may try it, too. For more don't hesitate to e-mail me. Good luck, Agnes

Try downloading the CWShredder at: "http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/cwschronicles.html". After months of being afflicted with CoolSearch and other problems related to this Trojan (including a system slow-down and porn sites being deposited into Favorites and History), this is the ONLY fix that has worked for me. Blocking/restricting CoolSearch and setting your homepage options back to what you want them to be are temporary solutions only, unless you're astronomically lucky. The Trojan associated with CoolSearch is extremely widespread, infecting all sorts of generally ignored parts of your system. The download at the URL I listed above was designed for the sole purpose of eliminating this Trojan. Good luck.

To prevent the "cool search" trojan from recurring, do the following, in this sequence.
First, go to "Control Panel", select "System" from the menu, click on the "System
Restore" tab, and check the "shut off" option.

Make sure you are using a firewall. Windows XP has its own.

Then run Spybot Search and Destroy. If you do not already have this utility, you
can find it on CNet downloads.

Then go to http://www.pandasoftware.com and download "active scan", a free antivuirus
scanning utility for when you suspect you are already infected. It will not protect
you in the future, but will fix your problem now. Even if you have an anti-virus
program, it may not be up to date, and running this will not interfere with what
you have, but just act as another check. It is also downloadable via CNet. Use
the "entire computer" and "auto-disinfect" options when setting up the scan.

This sequence cleared up "cool search", which appeared on my browser last week and
kept coming back up even when I reset my home page, every time I rebooted.

I hope this helps.

Good luck,

Rick.

Changing the homepage in IE settings doesn't work because it keeps changing back whenever you reopen the application. There is probably a string somewhere causing this to happen. I have the same problem and it's making me crazy.

OKAY,I UNDERSTAND AND MY LAST RESORT WAS TO COPY COOLSEARCH ADDRESS or any other offending site..which I will list for you but... you have to go to TOOLS , INTERNET OPTION, then click on SECURITY and go for the RESTRICTED SITES and then enter the URL'S you found...THIS IS A LAST RESORT but somehow Im not bothered anymore with that coolsearch taking over my homepage http//fastscearch.cc http//search.atomz.com http//startpage.com http//websearch.net MAYBE THAT WILL HELP ?? TRY IT LET ME KNOW

UPDATE MAR 5 2004 Lavasoft (ad-aware 6.0) has added a new feature to rid your machine of the COOLSEARCH and other things, so for FUTURE READERS consider going to http://www.lavasoft.de/ to download the free version of ad-aware or use the cwsshredder...its entirely up to you. I am using the ad-aware 6.0 at this present time.
