I have a question about What to do about error messages during Windows startup:

MY THINKPAD STARTS UP IN AN ODD MODE, WITH A FLAPPINg BIRD FOR A CURSOR, AND A STUCK CALENDAR/CLOCK. ONCE I FIX IT, I gET AN ERROR SCREEN, WITH A CIRCLE AND A VERTICAL LINE SYMBOL, WITH "ON "`AND "OFF" WRITTEN RESPECTIVELY BENEATH EACH SYMBOL. ONCE I RE-BOOT, IT IS OK. HOWEVER, I HAVE ALSO LOST FUNCTION OF SEVERAL KEYS ON THE BOARD--IS THIS A VIRUS??? HELP PLEASE!

One way to find out, is to run a virus scan, right?

Trend Micro Housecall

Panda Active Scan

Btw, please DON'T shout! Using all CAPS on the net is considered yelling....

From everything I have seen, this indicates a bad CMOS battery. It is like a large watch battery that maintains the memory like the system date and time. Replace this battery and you should be fine.

Rob, I'm having the same exact problem you had. Was the ultimate solution the small watch-like battery and how do you get to it? Thanks for your help.

were you able to solve the issue? If so, was it the internal battery.... the watch-like type one? Yours experiencing the same delemia.

I am having the same error message of 00161 and 00163. If the problem is the small watch like battery, where is it located in my laptop so that I can try replacing it?

Hi Harry:

I don't mean to discourage you, but my experience
with laptops is that they are nearly impossible to
open in a way that will allow you to reassemble
them "tightly."

In my case, the BIOS battery is not a quarter-like
battery at all -- it's a soldered-in NICAD under
the wrist rest, and there are no visible screws to
invite disassembly.

If you can't find specific instructions on the
Internet for disassembling your brand of laptop,
I'd strongly urge you take it to a shop familiar
with your brand of laptop.

Jerry

I had the same issue. I purchased a replacement for the Sony CR1220(slightly smaller and thinner than a dime) and replaced the battery. I got the same error but entered time and date and the TP380D booted without a problem. Thanks for the info.
