Cannot remove "ABOUT BLANK" homepage
Sunday, March 21, 2004 at 12:55 pm Posted by Ron
(3 messages posted)
I normally use "MSN" as my home page. Until recently it seems that my home page has
been "Hijacked" to use "About Blank" home page. Each time I reset my
home page to the default setting (msn) I can access it
only one time. The next time I try to open "msn" it has
been changed back to "about blank". I have scanned my system with "SpyBot" and have
made the recommended fixes for parasites, hijackers etc... but to
no avail... If anyone can help me I would appreciate it.
Thanks

Download the CWShredder and run it:
CoolWebSearch Chronicles Direct download: CWShredder.exe
Put it in a new folder. Close all browser windows and run it offline. It may execute
again after rebooting, so run the Shredder again. Keep it on hand and check for a
newer version frequently.
Clear out your TIF, other temp files and ActiveX Controls. Open the Control Panel
- Internet Options. Under the General tab click the Delete temporary internet files,
choose to delete all Offline content. In Settings, set the size of your TIF folder
between 5 - 10 MB. Also, go to Start - Find - Files or folders - in the named box,
type: *.tmp and choose Edit - select all - File - delete. Empty the contents of the
C:\Windows\temp folder and C:\temp folder, if you have one. Empty Recycle bin.
I suggest you install SpywareBlaster, to help prevent further problems. Be sure
to check for updates often and after you install it. SpywareGuard works well in conjuntion
with it and is available here also. They're both freeware: SpywareBlaster

I had the same problem. Ad aware and spybot s&d did not fix it. What helped me was
hijackthis. I found it at http://www.spychecker.com/program/hijackthis.html
You have to be careful when u use it because you could screw up legit programs.
The problem is that Internet explorer has bho's or browser helper objects. On my
pc (2000 pro) some of these were good like spybot, popup blocker, and something to
do with Norton. You have to read what each bho is before you check them.
I guessed and got lucky. I checked the others (I think that there were 2) and my
google search was good to go with no more about:blank. There are all sorts of other
things to check, but I left those alone. You should look at the ones that begin with
bho. Good luck. I thought fer sure I was going to screw something up, but every thing
seems ok.

Nothing has worked. I have SpyBlaster, SpyGuard, Adaware, Norton Antivirus, HijackThis,
CWShredder, and the problem is still there. Now SpyGuard tells me that something
is trying to change my home page...but I don't know how to get rid of it.
Any suggestions are appreciated.

The recipe for riding yourself of about:blank search hijacker is as follows.
There are two malicious .dll files on you computer. One is visible and can be easily
deleted. The other is HIDDEN. The hidden .dll regenerates the viewable .dll if it
is deleted or changed. The hidden file is the problem.
To rid your self of the hidden .dll, which is the core of the problem, do the following.
Download three free programs and install them.
1. Taskinfo
2. Killbox
3. CWSShredder
http://www.iarsn.com/taskinfo.html (trial version works for this)
http://download.broadbandmedic.com/VbStuff/KillBox.zip
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html
Open Internet Explorer with the about:blank page.
Then open taskinfo program.
Look for “Internet Explorer” on the left side and highlight it.
On the right side, open the “Modules” tab.
You will see a list of .dll files.
Sort the files by Company.
You should see a few .dll files that don't belong to any company or don’t have any
description. In the list should be both the malicious secondary .dll that is generated
by the malicious core .dll AND the malicious core dll. Again, they should not have
any legitimate company name or description.
Run CWSShredder. It will delete the secondary .dll that is generated by the hidden
core .dll and all associated registry entries.
Run Killbox.
In the "Paste Full Path of File to Delete" box, copy and paste the following:
c:\windows\system32\(whatever your identified core filename is).dll
Note: One will not find the malicious core .dll if one searches for it using windows
explorer or the file search engine. It is hidden.
IMPORTANT: Click on the Action menu and choose "Delete on Reboot". On the next screen,
click on the File menu and choose "Add File". Then it should show up in the window.
If that's successful, choose the Action menu and select "Process and Reboot". You'll
be prompted to reboot, do so.
After reboot, use the Taskinfo program again to check to see if the identified malicious
.dlls are gone. Don’t forget to open Internet Explorer to do this.
Run CWSShredder again and/or updated ADWARE program to remove remaining garbage.
DONE!

Ron - I don't have time to read all your responses and by now, your problem may be
fixed. However, for future reference as well as for other people's benefit, I ran
CWShredder to remove the hijack progtram, and then ran Spybot to remove any/all AdWare
and Spyware from my hard drive. Both programs are freeware so there's no cost
to you. CWShredder can be downloaded at:
http://www.soft32.com/download_19014.html
Spybot can be downloaded at:
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/spybot.html
You should also run Spybot after every internet session. This keeps your hard drive
and registry clean of those annoying and potentially dangerous AdWare/Spyware intrusions.
Good luck!

I had the same "about:blank" homepage problem, plus, I had a new toolbar on my browser
that I didn't put there, there was no uninstall for it, and no program folder for
it. It looked kind of like the google toolbar, except it said "commander" on it.
I ran AdAware, and it found a home page redirect registry key, but everytime I deleted
it, it just came back. I downloaded and ran cwsshredder, but that didn't help. Then
I read the post above by David D., and followed his advice, (except the part about
running cwsshredder, because I knew that didn't work) and found the file. It was
in c:\windows\system32\ and it was called ietb.dll, and you couldn't just delete
it, it wouldn't let you, but I was able to use the KillBox program to get rid of
it. So FYI, if you have ietb.dll on you computer, get KillBox, and get rid of it.

I am not one to usually respond to these types of things, but the about.blank trojan
was a major PITA and real annoyance. I researched all types of solutions and I want
readers to know that this is the least intimadating and easy solution to execute
and follow.
Thank you David.

Dave I responded yesterday as this being the simplest solution of all for about.
blank. However it seems that about.blank has planted a window that searches for a
short to DownloadPlus.exe. Saying yes or no to the command starts about.blank again.
How do I get rid of this search for shortcut window?????
Thank you

Go to download.com and download ad-ware 6.0181 and save it to a desktop folder.
After you do this install it and run the search. It will remove the about bland
home page along with any other hidden ads that spotbot misses. You should run spot
bot and ad-ware after each time you are on the net. Good luck as I had a lot of
problems with this page.

I have tried and tried to get rid of about-blank homepage hijacker, I finally got
rid of it using Adware Away and scanning it in Save Mode of Windows XP (I think this
is the key to removal). Download Adware Away into a new folder, then boot into save
mode pressing the F8 key as windows reboots, run adware away and scan each item
separtately in the Remove hijackers, remove Adwares, Spywares, and Trojan Worms.
Remove each problem found individually. then reboot the computer. THe problem
should be gone! Thanks for all the ideas on this site that helped get rid of this
very annoying web hijacker.

About:Blank is a trojan that highjacks your search and home pages. You can fix it
by using the registry editor. Make sure you back up your registry before making any
changes. Run regedit.exe, select File, export then give it a name such as "My Registry"
and save to your desktop.
Next, select Edit, Find and type in "About:Blank" and click next. Each time it finds
this in your registry, select modify and enter the web page you want to use such
as: http://www.google.com for your search page and http://www.microsoft.com for
your Start Page.
If you want to make sure that you don't get any of this spyware in the future, use
TrendMicro's PC-Cillin Internet Security to protect your computer. You can find
it at www.trendmicro.com. They also allow you to do a free spyware and virus scan
of your system using "House Call".
Hope this helps you.

I hate to sound ingrateful, but I have this problem, and thus far, none of what anyone
has suggested has worked, and here's why:
People have suggested using certain spyware removal programs, one of which (noadware)
is NOT a free program.
To the posters who suggested using Hijackthis; running this program did not identify
the lines of code you suggested it would, so I couldn't identify and delete them.
And Killbox? Please, this program doesn't even have the user interface options mentioned
by the poster who recommended it.
Sorry if I sound flippant, maybe it's just that I've been trying to remove this damn
thing for 3hrs now, with no luck. The people who create this garbage should be locked
up...and the ironic thing is that all the ads and crap generated from about:blank
are for SPYWARE REMOVAL PROGRAMS! Isn't that just a kick in the butt?
The more useful info to have would be how to avoid getting about:blank to begin with....we
have antivirus and we don't surf questionable pages or download junk, so I'm wondering
how it got there to begin with?

Yeah, we know what it is.
Please, save us all the canned responses and post something useful. This method does
not work, and I'm sure you're trying to sell something.
I hope you, and the people who wrote this thing, can sleep at night knowing that
you've wasted valuable time from our lives that a) we'll never get back, and b) we
could have used to contribute something useful to society.

re: Cannot remove "ABOUT BLANK" homepage

I am as frustrated as Ron. I have even used Adware Away and that did not work.
I am at the point where I would buy a good remover if I could trust that one would
actually remove it. Can anyone really help?

Help Resources for "ABOUT BLANK" Hijackings

This thread is many months old. Since the date this thread started in March, there
have been more advanced variants of the About Blank CWSearch hijacker. This is only
one of them:
PCHell: aboutblank
There are many malware support forums on the net, so a Google search should have
led you to something more definite. You can post on any one of these forums, just
to name a few.
Bleepingcomputer forums: Tutorials
"Announcement: Hi-Jacking-Spyware Links, Tutorials & FAQ's" and "Announcement: **Before
You Post, Read-Follow These Rules and Guidelines"
CastleCops forums
SpywareWarrior forums
It's adviseable to consider using an alternative browser as your main browser. FireFox
(most popular) or Opera are a couple good choices. IE has too many security issues
and is very vulnerable to malware infections and hijackings. Hijackings are very
rare, with other browsers. If you stay with IE, I suggest IE-Spyads, also. For other
tips and suggestions:

I have had this same problem ans the only way i can find to fix it is by using hijackthis.Be
careful what you delete, read about every entry that you think you should delete-you
can also send a copy of your log and others will help you.

I had the same problem in Windows 98SE and tested Ken's suggestion to use Hijack
This to solve the issue. Thankfully it worked. I download 'Hijack This' free from
http://www.spychecker.com/program/hijackthis.html.
When run I received a log of internet associated files. I deleted those ending '=
about:blank', plus BHO and Filters ending 'C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\BPMOPA.DLL'. No more
'About:blank'. Thanks Ken

I would'nt recommend Audrey advice about typing REGSVR32 SOFTPUB.DLL in the run on
the start menu. I tried and i wasnt even able to connect to the internet after i
restarted...Luckily i used my other computer to get advice on getting back connected
and found www.duxcw.com/faq/win/xp/secure.. i followed their steps and fixed it instantly...what
it did was it wouldnt let me connect to trusted sites(m.s.n. ,yahoo, etc.)
