Can't finish installing Windows 95

I am working on a Toshiba Satellite 2215 with Windows 98 preinstalled. The computer
when turned on locks up at the Windows 98 logo screen. When I turn it off and try
to open in safe mode it does the same thing. When I try to boot with my boot-disk
it does nothing, just takes me through scan disk.
So I tried to install Windows 98 upgrade, since I can't find my Windows 98 disk.
When it starts copying files the computer locks up and says that it is missing files
and can't copy.
So, I have found a Windows 95 disk and I am trying to load that. I gets to about
31% of copying files and locks. Gives the following - File Copying Problem - You
interrupted the setup of ....... (.cad) files. I tell it ok and you hear the motor
running, but nothing happens. The error message comes up again. Then I try skip,
same thing.
I am deseperatly trying to get this computer up and running for my father.
Do I need to clear the drive first, then install Windows 95? Also, I am semi-computer
literate, so please give me step, by step instructions.
Thanks in advance!

Ok. I did the partitioning. When I went to format the drive - A:\>FORMAT C: /S.
It says - WARNING, ALL DATA ON NON-REMOVABLE DISK DRIVE C: WILL BE LOST! PROCEED
WITH FORMAT (Y/N) - I say yes. It then says FORMATTING and stops at 2,047.34M @
1 percent completed. Not Ready Format Terminated. What am I doing wrong, please
help

How big?
Friday, April 9, 2004 at 8:35 pm Posted by Jerry

Hi KC:
How big is your hard drive?
If it's bigger than 2GB, then you're going to have to use a Win95 "B" version BOOTDISK
(with its FDISK program) to partition the hard drive into one partition bigger than
2GB. If you're using an "A" version bootdisk, that version can only "see" the first
2GB of any hard drive larger than 2GB (and stops there).
Another option for "A" version users is to partition a large hard drive into 2 or
3 separate 2GB partitions. More than 3 partitions can be set up using "logical"
drives, but it gets a little messy.

It says its formatting 4,118.22M. I tried using the 95 (B) startup disk. THe computer
wouldn't take it, it asked for the 98 diskette instead. I have tried to format it
again and it is not doing anything. Says - not ready Format terminated.
Help!

Let's go back to FDISK

Hi K.C.
When you run FDISK from whatever bookdisk works, is the FIRST screen you get the
one that says "Your computer has a disk larger than 512 MB."?

That's good.

Okay -- I just wanted to be sure you were using the FDISK with the FAT32 option.
Have you tried the using the FORMAT.COM that comes with the Windows95-Version B bootdisk
downloaded from this site:
http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm
Be sure to download the file to a place on a (working) computer, and not directly
to a floppy. You have to RUN the downloaded program to CREATE the BOOTDISK from
the blank floppy disk you will supply.
Then use the BOOTDISK to boot the broken computer by turning the power on while the
bootdisk is in the computer. It will bring you to "A:\>" which is where you type
"FORMAT C: /S".
Good luck. Keep us posted.
