how to stop things loading automatically?

A friend has twenty or more things apparently starting with Windows and running in
the background. I went start > run > msconfig and came up with "file not found".
I looked in the Programs > Startup folder and there's only one program, which she
does want to load.
Some things, like the Messenger, I can get at and tell them not to load, but I have
no idea how to get at most of the others. Where should I look, please?

msconfig doesn't come with '95 but you can add it &
it works fine.
If you exhaust all the possibilities of disabling from
the programs themselves, you can download msconfig
for 95 here......................

Thank you very much. I already poked around to see what I could
turn off, so I'll go straight for your d/l first thing tomorrow.

Steve Easton's has a download executable for MSConfig on his website. That includes
the .CHM help file that goes with MSConfig, if you're interested.
This is an excellent resource for Windows 95 and other 9x OS's. Lots of goodies and
tips! 95isalive.com
P.S Although, MSConfig is a good way to remove unnecessary startup items, you should
first check in the options of the programs themselves. Their settings override your
selection in MSCofig, if they have the choice to run at startup or place an icon
in the tray.

Many thanks, Carol. The PC belongs to a lady of 85, great typist and book keeper,
no computer knowledge at all. She's had lots of people helping her and I guess they
each installed their pet utility. Haven't clicked your link yet, but it sounds more
than promising.
I think I'll do msconfig first, then search the machine for those that reappear.
Again, thank you.

Hi Fay,
don't know if you saw my response to Carol, but I
tried 95isalive first for msconfig but I don't think there
is a direct download there.
But the site is well worth a visit all the same.....;)

Keith and Carol,
Thank you both. Both sites have plenty of other useful info and I'm very glad to
add them to my "places to look for help".
Happy days!

Fay,
My apologies. Steve doesn't have it available for download. He was talking about
making up a download for it, when he got around to it. I wasn't paying attention
when I checked again.
The link Keith gave you is good. You don't need a help file for it, anyway. Btw,
it belongs in C:\Windows\System. Just Cut/Paste it into that folder, and that's it.
More importantly, this would be very worthwhile and can be a life, "OS", saver. The
automatic registry backup and restore tool set from Win98 will work in 95. Scroll
down to this section:
"Use the tools scanreg and scanreg/restore from 98 in Windows 95"
http://95isalive.com/registry.htm
P.S. Windows 9x doesn't need Autoexec.bat or Configs.sys loading, so those can be
unchecked there, also.

Hi Fay:
You may be interested in this cute, easy-to-use freeware program:

Download the "standalone" version. The "applet" version was a little buggy when
I tried it.
