Windows95 put on by Gateway, how do I uninstall?

We have been given a Gateway 2000 computer. Since we're on a limited budget getting Windows 95 is a DIY situation. I have Windows 98 and of course want it on there, how do I uninstall 95? Let me explain that 95 was set on by Gateway, and it is not on the add/remove list, and is not in the startup area either. My 98 disc goes almost all the way thru and says I need a 98 upgrade disc, which I've been told is not being sold anymore. So the question is how do I manually take 95 off to put 98 on? I use the internet and computer for homeschool use and it is a valuable tool for us, any help to my email is extremely appreciated. Thanks

The only time anything similar to "Remove" on a Windows OS was offered, it was the various W9X flavors, IF you were upgrading and chose to save the old OS. A new Gateway 2000 PC in 1997 wouldn't have had DOS on it first, at least not a full install. Your problem is pretty simple, though. The Win98 OS came with a startup floppy upon which was a DOS7 version of "Format".

You can use that utility to clean off the contents of the hard drive and start over with a "clean install", which is a better way to go. Or, you can rename the Win.Com file in the C:\Windows folder to "Win.Old" and then your Win98 will proceed to act like it's an upgrade version.

What Kiwi says is good info as far as it goes. The question is how important being online is. If your using a dial up modem, you'll need to have the proper modem drivers for your 98 installation. Don't count on the 98 disk having them. Most cases involves opening the case, removing the modem, and getting all the data off it. Then a search thru "Google" may help you find it. Sadly, new modems cost around $20.00, but unless your installing 98SE, these new modems rarely come with drivers for 98FE or 95. Take your time with this problem, it can turn out ugly. p.s. Same applies to your sound card.

If you are willing to lose all information on the hard drive, then you can wipe it
clean and install 98 from scratch. If so, the simplest thing might be to run FORMAT
from a win98 floppy. Note that in general you want FAT32, not FAT16, as the format
for win98.

You might even want to consider using FDISK, also run from a floppy, to remove all
partitions, then create one or more new ones, then FORMAT them as FAT32.

In any event, the necessary floppy boot disks and tools are available from www.bootdisk.com.
They also have several tutorials worth reading.

But, before doing any of this, be sure that you have (1) a real win98 retail install
disk, not just a restoration disk from some other computer. Restoration disk are
usually specific to the hardware and often do not install on other computers. (2)
floppies or CDs with win98 compatible drivers for all peripherals, especially the
video card (or chip) and the sound card (or chip). You will also need win98 drivers
for things like modem, printer, ZIP drive, scanner, etc.

When you first boot into win98, you may need to choose "safe mode" to actually reach
te desktop level. From there you can install drivers. usually the video comes first,
since otherwise you will be stuck with VGA (low resolution) default video. If a
drive install causes a crash, and a reboot fails to fix it, return to safe mode and
uninstall the driver and/or install a different one.

In general, it is best not to attach any unecessary peripherals when you first boot
into a new operating system. So, detatch the printer and scanner. If you have an
internal ZIP drive or similar, unplug the wires going to it. If a jmodem, temporarily
pull out the card. Ditto for any extra ports (like USB) that are on PCI cards, although
a win95 computer probably does not have those.
