I can't get sound from my pcmcia cd drive
Wednesday, August 10, 2005 at 2:42 am Posted by woolly
(15 messages posted)
I have a very ancient thinkpad with windows 95 as its OS with an external cd rom
drive which I plug into the pc slots. The sound on the laptop works OK, the cd works
OK, but no sound comes through the laptop speaker when an audio cd is playing. If
I attach external speakers the sound is fine. I'm sure there is something very obvious
a computer idiot like myself should be doing. I have checked volume control etc.
Pity my ignorance, but send me some advice.
Thanks,
Woolly

Hi Woolly:
When you say "If I attach external speakers the
sound is fine," do you mean attaching the external
speakers directly to the CD player box, or to the
external speaker jack on the computer case?

Thanks Jerry - should have made that clear - the external speaker doesn't work if
I attach it to the laptop jack - but does if attached to the cd player. But if I
play a CD rom game the sound is fine from the laptop.

Hi Woolly:
Do you have the Windows CD Player software installed?
Check for it here:
START -> PROGRAMS -> ACCESSORIES -> MULTIMEDIA
There should be a menu item under MULTIMEDIA called
"CD PLAYER."

in some way?
Thanks for your patience.

Hi Woolly:
Some more things to check:
START -> SETTINGS -> CONTROL PANEL -> MULTIMEDIA
On the AUDIO TAB, do you see a listing for
PREFERRED DEVICE? If it's "grayed out," your
sound card drivers may not be working right.
Also, make sure the volume control is "up."
START -> PROGRAMS -> ACCESSORIES -> MULTIMEDIA ->
VOLUME CONTROL
Check to make sure one (or more) of the MUTE check
boxes aren't checked. Also, make sure the volume
controls are not all the way down.

Also, if you have the little speaker icon
displayed in the SYSTEM TRAY (down by the CLOCK),
left-click on it to open it, and make sure MUTE
isn't checked there, and that the slider is UP.

Yes, checked both - mute all not selected, slider up - still no sound. Should I admit
defeat and just buy some mini speakers - don't really want to but might be the only
solution!

Hi Woolly:
"Nah." I'm not quite out of ideas, yet.
Using WINDOWS EXPLORER, go into
C:\WINDOWS\MEDIA
and make a COPY of
"The Microsoft Sound.wav"
and put the copy on the DESKTOP. (Don't DRAG it
there, that will MOVE it out of the MEDIA folder
into the DESKTOP folder -- make a COPY.)
It should appear on your DESKTOP as a little white
page with a speaker in front of it. Double click
on it. The SOUND RECORDER program should open
(probably in the upper-left corner, and you can
SEE the wave-form of the sound as it plays). Do
you HEAR it? If you don't HEAR it, do you at
least SEE it?
This is a long-shot:
START -> SETTINGS -> CONTROL PANEL ->
PC Card (PCMCIA)
Click the GLOBAL SETTINGS tab.
Make sure the
"Disable PC card sound effects"
is NOT checked.

Hi, Jerry,
Thanks for all this - I looked at the PC Card settings and Disable PC card sound
effects is not checked.
I did all you suggested re the Microsoft sound wave. I heard the sound but it played
through Windows media player which automatically opened when I double clicked. Is
this significant??
Cheers,

Hi Woolly:
It's really not significant that your WAV files
play through Windows Media Player instead of SOUND
RECORDER -- that's just how the file extensions
are associated with WMD instead of SOUND RECORDER.
What IS significant is that your HEARD the sound
playing, which means the problem is NOT the
speakers, so I suspect buying new outboard
speakers wouldn't solve the problem of the CDROM's
not playing.
It also means the SOUND CARD drivers are all
properly installed and working, or you wouldn't
have the WAV file at all.
Let's look at something else --
RIGHT-CLICK on the MY COMPUTER icon on the
DESKTOP, then select PROPERTIES, then DEVICE
MANAGER. Scroll through the list that opens, and
see if there are any yellow "?" or "!" anywhere.
Somewhere you should see some evidence of the
driver for the PCMCIA card for the CDROM. It
won't be the "PCIC or compatible PCMCIA
controller" entry under "PCMCIA socket." There
should be another entry somewhere that
specifically shows that CDROM card.
Also, check
START -> SETTINGS -> CONTROL PANEL
Double-click on PC CARD
and see if the CDROM card is shown in one of the
sockets. If you have more than one socket, the
second one should be EMPTY. If it isn't empty,
shut down and unplug the second device, and
reboot. I've had trouble with two devices
installed before.

Hi, Jerry,
Your patience is astounding! I have checked the two things you suggested - the cd
rom driver was fine and also the second PCMCIA slot is empty. The only ! in yellow
is for a standard serial mouse.
What puzzles me, I don't know if I made this crystal clear at the start, is that
CDRoms have sound, but not audio cds. Why should one play through the pc speaker
and not the other? As I said at the start, if I attach speakers to the cdrom drive
jack I can hear sound from audio cds. Somewhere in the back of my mind I wonder if
it might be to do with the fact that I once had a flipdisk portable hard drive with
a 'jukebox' on it that I used to play my cds. If i right click on the cd drive icon
in my computer when an audio disk is loaded to launch it that way, it tells me that
it can't find the programme to play the disk and I need to specify the file to play
it. But when I try to do that it tells me that cd audio is associated with the mmjb
(Music Match Jukebox) programme, which I don't have any more. Could this be the problem?
I can open the windows cd player and see the audio cd playing, but as I said there
is no sound.
I am sure this is all irrelevant, but I've typed it in anyway so you can discount
it.
Regards as ever,
Woolly

Hi Woolly:
I wonder if the CD PLAYER lost its mapping to the
input of the SOUND CARD when JUKE BOX was
installed.
Double-left-click on the MY COMPUTER icon on your
DESKTOP.
Click VIEW -> OPTIONS -> FILE TYPES
Scroll down the list until you see
AudioCD
then left-click once on it.
At the bottom of the panel, if it doesn't say
"Opens with CD PLAYER"
Click EDIT
Under ACTIONS, double-left-click PLAY
Another window will open.
In the box marked "Application used to perform
action" type this:
C:\WINDOWS\cdplayer.exe /play
Click OK (the top window will close)
Click CLOSE on the next window
Click CLOSE on the next window
Close the MY COMPUTER window
I don't know if it's necessary to reboot when a
change like this is made, but it can't hurt.
If this doesn't fix it, or if the AudioCD was
already associated with the CD PLAYER, we'll try
UNINSTALLING and REINSTALLING the CD PLAYER
(you'll need your Windows Installation CD for
this, unless all the CAB files are stored on your
hard drive). Let me know. We can walk through it
together.

Hi, Jerry,
I think you have got to the root of the problem. I have attempted the two things
you suggested - still no solution , but I think some important revelations.
There was no AudioCD in the File Types list but I did find CD Audio Track which I
hope is the same thing. But there seemed to be a whole lot of stuff missing. In the
Edit File Type Window there is nothing in Content type and nothing in the Default
ext for content type boxes. It didn't open with CD player - I couldn't find the commands
Open or Play - that window was blank and I added the commands manually - it seems
that the cd player has undergone some kind of trauma associated with the jukebox.
I can't actually delete this as the main files for the JB were stored on the detachable
extra hard drive I used to use which is broken.
I don't have a windows installation cd but 25 back up floppy disks which I was instructed
to make as the machine came with Windows 95 already installed. It seems that reinstallation
is the best option as all is definitely not well with cd player.
Many thanks again,
Woolly

Hi Woolly:
I'm not sure I would trust the 25 floppy disks to
be in usable condition, but you MAY have the
WINDOWS installation files also stored on the hard
drive. Look around for some files with names
like:
WIN95_02.CAB
WIN95_28.CAB
These were commonly stored in a folder called:
C:\WIN95
or
C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS
Once I found them in a folder called:
C:\INSTALL

Hi Woolly:
Great! Having the CAB files on the hard drive is
just like having the Windows CD. Let's try
installing (or uninstalling, then re-installing)
the CD PLAYER.
START -> SETTINGS -> CONTROL PANEL
Double-click ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS.
Click the WINDOWS SETUP tab.
Scroll down to MULTIMEDIA.
Double-click on MULTIMEDIA.
Find CD PLAYER in the list.
If there is a check mark, remove it.
Close each of the windows with OK.
Reboot the computer (it MAY prompt you to do this
anyway -- I'm not sure you need this step, but it
can't hurt.)
Now, go through the whole process again, but PUT
the check mark next to CD PLAYER.
This should re-install it, hopefully making all
the connections correctly.
If there is a prompt telling you to "put your
Windows CD in the CDROM drive," there should be
another option that will allow you to "point" the
installer wizard to where you have those CAB
files. Sometimes the button is called BROWSE,
sometimes it's called OTHER LOCATIONS. If your
original Windows install was done from these CAB
files, Windows may "remember" this, and just go
directly to the hard drive CAB files without
prompting you for the CD disk.
Just for the record, you should have the Windows
COA number written down somewhere in case you ever
have to do a complete re-install of Windows from
the CAB files. You can see the number while
Windows is running, so write it somewhere you can
find it when Windows ISN'T running:
Right-click on the MY COMPUTER icon on the
DESKTOP.
Select PROPERTIES.
The COA number is shown in the middle of the panel
under "Registered to".
Good luck.
Keep us posted.

Hi Woolly:
How about the drivers for the PCMCIA CDROM? You
might try running the "install" program (if you've
still got it around) for that PCMCIA card.
I must tell you, however, I have had trouble with
PCMCIA driver installations. I don't know of a
good, sure-fire way to UNINSTALL old drivers,
which may be incorrectly installed or corrupted.
I had a driver installation fail on more than one
occasion, and re-installing the driver didn't
correct it. I think the installation program saw
remnants of the partial installation, and didn't
install everything anew. I posted forum messages
in several places fishing for tips on how to
uninstall PCMCIA drivers, and have yet to find a
way. Fortunately, these failed attempts have all
occurred on my "test" computer, so it was really
no problem to reformat and start over fresh. But,
that's not really the solution I would like to
find.
If you want to try reinstalling your drivers, I
can't think that it will work any less-well than
it does now.

Hi, Jerry,
Not sure I have the installation disk so I might pass on that. This old think pad
is a bit weird - sometimes you have to keep on repeating an action till it actually
works. I had to uninstall the cd player driver twice before it showed it was uninstalled
and I keep disabling the trackpoint and it still shows as enabled, until finally
it decides to go. I think that there is so much 'rubbish' in terms of what you describe,
remnants of previous drivers etc on this machine that in the end it needs reformatting.
It would be a relief in many ways. Whether I have the nerve for that is a different
matter - I'm nervous of doing anything which might stop it playing cd roms as my
little boy can't live without 'Reader Rabbit Toddler'! I'd need to gather everything
together and find the cd rom driver from somewhere - but I think it was a plug and
play device. Whatever. But I must thank you because I know my way around windows
so much better than before and that can only be a bonus!
If I ever pluck up the courage - or pay someone - to reformat - I will post and report
audio cds coming through the pc loud and clear. Until then, this is one windows annoyance
that will keep on itching.
Warmest regards,
Joyce (Woolly) Woolridge

If you want to give it a try, post as much

the disks, and the thinkpad manual which describes some adjustments to the settings
that need making when you reinstall the windows software for the thinkpad. The mini
speakers are £9.99 at our local electronics store! I think my lack of general knowhow
means I better steer clear. Away for a couple of days so will not read reply till
Tuesday.

Joyce

Hi Woolly:
Well -- (big hesitation here) -- I wonder if the
PCMCIA CDROM was designed for Wind95-B (or later)
-- I hesitate to encourage you to reformat and
reinstall an otherwise well-working Win95-A.
Reinstalling on a clean (reformatted) drive means
you have to reinstall all your other drivers and
applications -- which means rounding up all THOSE
original installation disks. (Although I do this
all the time on my "test" computer, I know exactly
where all the needed components are.)
I think if everything else is working OK, I would
just buy a free-standing CD player ("Boom Box")
for my little listener, and not press my luck with
the Win95A computer.
Sorry.
Jerry

Hi, Jerry,
I think that this could very well be the case. Thinking back I have never played
audio cds on the drive - only through a jukebox programme I downloaded from the net
as I said which may got round the problem. I am pleased you said not to reinstall.
A little (in my case, very little) knowledge is a dangerous thing and I know from
experience that it all seems so simple until you try to do it, then 48 hours later
you are reaching for the paracetamol and swearing at inanimate objects and the machine
is still not working!
Now I know I have tried everything possible aside from the zero option, I will get
a gadget for the little one which he will love!
Until the next windows annoyance - best wishes to all. I have enjoyed this correspondence
very much and can now check device drivers and all manner of things I couldn't do
before.
Regards,
Joyce (Woolly)

Hi Woolly:
Something you said in your last message has been
running through my mind -- the part about the fact
that it played CDs one time while a "jukebox"
program was installed.
What if we tried another CD-PLAYER program other
than the official Windows version?
You might give this one a try:
http://www.cabbala.net/powerplay/
It's called POWERPLAY. I can vouch that it
co-exists perfectly with the Windows CD Player,
and it won't hijack the defaults for CD disks. It
will also UNINSTALL itself cleanly using the
ADD/REMOVE PROGRAM applet. Make sure your PCMCIA
card player is plugged in while POWERPLAY is
installing itself.
After it's installed, start POWERPLAY first, then
put a CD disk into your drive, and see if
POWERPLAY sees it. It works very much like the
Windows CD-PLAYER program.
Good luck.
Jerry

Hi, Jerry,
I installed Powerplay which was very easy but there is still no sound. It's a neat
cd player - shame I couldn't get it to work. Somewhere I think the cd audio sound
is still linked to the now defunct E drive I used to have - well, that is the explanation
of someone who knows nothing!

Woolly

Well, it was worth a try. If I think of anything
else, I'll post it here. Sometimes I get my best
ideas in the middle of the night -- for no
apparent reason.
