hi everyone. i am trying to revive my son'd old computer for him. he had a virus in it.. i ended up reformatting it, unfortunately it had been so long since i used any of the software. we lost his 98 cd.. so i loaded the old 95 back in it. it seems to have worked but when we boot it up now it says.. *While initializing device IOS: windows protection error. you need to restart your computer.* of course rebooting only brings us back to the very same error msg. what di i do wrong. and can it be fixed. thanks in advance for any help.

Morning Bonnie,
Just a suggestion. I'd format the hard drive again and try for another new install,
paying close attention to any messages you get. Post back here if you see any other
messages during install. good luck, Don

This problem normally has something to do with AMD K6 or running at 350mhz or faster or Athlon CPU's running at 1gh or faster. You need to run an official Microsoft patch called AMDK6UPD.exe from within Win95 to get it to work. If you can boot Win95 to safe mode after the "Getting Ready to Run Windows for the First Time" screen, it is easy to install. If you can't get into safe mode, put your HDD in another PC and run it in safe mode to apply the patch then put it back in your own PC and it will continue with the installation. You can get the patch & info from Microsoft here -> http://support.microsoft.com/kb/192841
