Does it work if you boot up on a bootable floppy disk
with CDROM support?

I once got a CDRW on a huge bargain from an office supply store. It took an abnormally long time to warm up to read a disc. Often I would boot up and find there was no drive there. It was supposed to be 24x-52x but it only worked reliably about 8x. Eventually I got a better one at a modest price and haven't had that problem -- except once.

I once had the BIOS recognizing the drive but not Windows. (I had changed things around when installing a new hard drive.) I found that I had a conflict in my settings. Once I had the CD consistently as slave in the BIOS, the jumper on the drive and in the Device Manager the problem went away.
