CD rom installation problem!

I can not load programs from a CD. All indications are that the CD ROM is installed and working. For some reason the CD ROM hangs the system when installation of a program from a CD is attempted. I suspect that the problem has something to do with the way the Interrupt and DMA are set up. The CD ROM is shown on the "View by devices type" page of the SYSTEM PROPERTIES DEVICE MANAGER ", however, when I go to "View by connection" page the CD ROM is not shown - It should be there but it's missing. The CD ROM drive and cable are known to be good. I would appreciate hearing from anyone that can help me with this problem.

Does it say "this device is working" in the DEVICE MANAGER? If not, install drivers.

The "device is working". The CD-ROM drive and cable worked in another computer. I am beginning to suspect a motherboard problem. I hear a clicking sound coming from the drive during power-up and when attempting to access files on a CD. Tom

Try it on the other IDE cable. Also check your power supply by unplugging other things (like the floppy, pull some cards, etc)
