I'm trying to upgrade to 98 but when i use the setup program i get a message before the setup begins gathering system information. the message says disk can not upgrade. use windows 98 upgrade disk 1 and i can not start windows because i moved the files from the folder windows to a dummy folder. i was trying to fool the disk into thinking it was an empty hard drive. it didn't work (it worked on a different computer :{). i need help on ether one.

Hi carthinain:

OPTION 1:
If you want your Win95 back, try using a floppy BOOTDISK to
get into DOS. Then, RENAME the folder (directory) where you
put all the Windows files. Call it C:\WINDOWS

Now, reboot the computer without the floppy. If you didn't
tamper with anything except the C:\WINDOWS folder, Windows
should come back.

Once you get your Win95 back, you can upgrade it to Win98
with a Win98 FULL INSTALL disk, if you follow the directions
here:
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/win95/r1059975805

OPTION 2:
If you don't need to keep anything on the old Win95
computer, use a floppy bootdisk with CDROM support. It will
contain FORMAT.COM which will let you wipe everything, and
install Win98 from your Win98 FULL installation disk.

OPTION 3:
If "Option #1" didn't work, and you still have stuff on the
old Win95 box that you need to save, I would use a parallel
port ZIP drive (about $10 on eBay). It will boot from DOS
on a floppy bootdisk, with the right DOS drivers (still
available [believe it or not, bless 'em] on the Iomega
website).

Then you can use DOS to copy the data files from the old
Win95 box to ZIP disk(s) to move them to another (working)
computer. Note that the DOS "COPY" command will NOT
preserve any long files names. However . . .

If you use one of several LFN emulators, you CAN copy the files
with their long file names intact. More information is
here:
http://sta.c64.org/lfnemu.html
My favorite is "Odi's LFN Tools."

Good luck.

Jerry

You might also just try replacing the boot sector with 98 files.

BACK UP everything in c: first, except maybe the swap file. Make a 95 boot disk with
95's Sys.com (c:\windows\command), just in case.

Boot with a 98 disk, type "SYS c:" ( you may need to copy Sys.com from the 98 cd
to your floppy) then try your full install.

here's the thing i don't have any 95 boot disks or the windows 95 disk. how do i put the win 98 files that are on the disk to the windows file. i can only use commands and file names to start windows, so what command could i use to start the windows 98 setup program in dos mode?

Hi carthinain:

In your last post, you didn't say whether you needed to save
existing data, or could just go ahead with a fresh
installation of Win98.

In the case of a "fresh installation," you will need a
bootable floppy disk, which you say you don't have. You can
get one free. Follow these directions:
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/win95/r1065769891

If you need step-by-step instructions for loading the new
Win98, try looking through these:

Hi carthinain:

No floppy drive at all, eh? This just gets more
and more complicated, doesn't it? It's possible
that your computer can boot from a bootable CDROM
disk if the boot order is set properly in the BIOS
setup.

I can't speak for the Gateway "Restore" disks, but
genuine MicroSoft Win95 CDs were NOT bootable.
Perhaps the Win98 disks were, but I am not
familiar with Win98 installation disks.

If you are managing to get to a DOS prompt somehow
and need help with DOS commands, I can recommend
this little tutorial:
http://www.networkclue.com:80/os/Windows/learning-DOS.aspx

Note that in DOS, commands must be typed EXACTLY.
For instance, there is a difference between a
"slash" ("/") and a "backslash" ("\"). If you
want to work on a folder called "C:\DUMMY" and you
type "C:/DUMMY", DOS isn't going to do anything
but sit there and pout.

unless thats the gateway that came with the disk, it won't work. you need to download a bootable CD from ??bootcd.com?? (is that right) or get a floppy drive.

I wont work! then i am imagining that an IBM computer model that is made for win
95 is upgraded and works. exept for 1 thing, i need to know how to get its authintic
validation code or know how to use regedit to find where the old one is. (that is
if the old one will still work as the authentic validation code.)

P.S. i found the dos-mode keyword for delete (ERASE)
and that is how i by passed the system and upgraded

Hi carthinain:

It may be possible to retrieve your C-of-A number
for Win95, even on a machine that won't boot all the
way into Windows.

Details are here:

Reboot in DOS. Go into C:\WINDOWS. Delete WIN.COM. Or if you are afraid to burn your bridges, rename WIN.COM to WIN.CO. That way you can go back if you change your mind.

The exact DOS syntax for renaming that would be:

REN WIN.COM WIN.CO

To navigate thru the directories (folders) use CD as in:

CD \WINDOWS

To change to a different drive, just enter the name of the drive:

C:

While ERASE will erase a file, most people use the synonym DEL.

To make a new directory (let's call it newdir) the command is MD:

MD newdir

To delete a directory the command is DELTREE. It will also delete all files in the directory and all subdirectories.

To see the files in a directory:

DIR /P

You only need the /P if there are more than 20 files.

That is the basics of the COMMAND mode (aka DOS).

You asked about this upgrade on dec.28 here we are in jan 12 and I assume it's still not done. It's a very simple task! You need a 'setup floppy' 98 and a cd probably 98se. Before you power up, put the floppy in place. The pc will start in setup mode. On the command, format c: (once thats done theres no going back) It will ask you to boot, you select 'boot from cd' only THEN put in the cd. The prompt is E:setup and let it rip. You can then sellect from a list the various component's you wish to install. Follow the prompts exactly. Finally, make sure you have the OEM number, it will ask for it. (right click my computer, properties). Good luck.

I'm sorry it didn't work. I just double checked
mine, and it's about 1/3 of the way through the
SYSTEM.1ST file. the "ProductId" string only
appears once, with the number right after it.

Hi carthinain:

If you're absolutely sure the floppy disk drive is
defective, then your machine probably needs to go
into a repair shop.

Let's make sure it isn't a software problem.

Make a BOOTDISK (on a good, working computer) by
following the instructions here:
http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

Make sure your new bootdisk works properly by
testing it by making it boot the known-good
computer you made it on.

You may need to adjust the setting in the BIOS
SETUP to make sure the computer looks first to the
floppy drive for an operating system.

Now try it in the broken computer. Assuming the
BIOS SETUP is properly pointed first at FLOPPY
DRIVE -- and it doesn't work just like it did when
you tested it in the "good" computer, then your
floppy drive really is broken, and it needs
repair, and it is not a "Windows" issue.

The "different computer" does not have to be running Windows 95. You only need any
other working computer to be able to download the bootdisk-making-executable file,
and then make the bootable floppy disk from it.

You can use a Windows 98/SE/ME/2K/XP computer to make a floppy bootdisk for Windows
95 -- just download the Windows 95 bookdisk-making-file.
