closing a file after a disk error

I was updating a file in an application and when I saved it I received a disk error. The screen then went blank. I had to turn off the computer to start working again. When I tried to open that file in the application I could not. I believe because of the way the computer was restarted the file was not properly closed. Is there any way to solve this problem

If you saved the file before the attempt that crashed, scandisk may recover part of that file. As a poor typist, I save after about every two sentences. HINT: Learn the key sequence ALT-F-S blindfolded.

What application were you using to write this file Bob?

Keiith: It's an obsure application called Wealthbuilder. I'm pretty sure that the data file is corrupted and likely not closed properly. However, if I can recover it even without the work I did that day before the disk error, it would be a great help. Bob

After running scandisk, change the extension in the latest FILExxxx.CHK (in c:\)files to match your program and try to open them. At worst you get gibberish and lose 20 minutes.

Thanks for the help. However, the problem is more serious than I realized. When I run scandisk, after a few minutes the disk drive just whirs and nothing else happens even if I let it sit for a half hour. It won't let me cancel scandisk. The only way I can get out is to shut down the computer I guess the disk drive is shot. Since it's an old laptop I'm going to scap it. Bob

Did you use a boot disk to run scandisk? Your 95 installation may be shot, causing the failure. Note: Copy c:\Windows\Command\Scandisk.exe (from another PC) to your boot disk. If you can't get to another PC, try bootdisk.com
