USB Support

If I recover my HD it will return to windows 95. This is version 4.0 950B 2.1 (mostly
likely as opposed to 2.0). This version has USB support. Therefore, is anybody aware
how extensive this USB support is?
Will it be any different from windows 98, which so far has supported most USB devices.
Will the w98 drivers for USB devices work on w95 too? Not all of them are available
for w95.
Jonathan.

USB drivers written for Windows 95 and Windows 98 First Edition will work. Those
for Windows 98 Second Edition likely won't.
For USB flash devices, the drivers are basically the same. Note that USB flash
devices are not just USB sticks, but also digital camera devices that transfer their
photos to PC by USB. Anyway, here's a good driver for this stuff: http://toastytech.com/files/cruzerwin95.html
I use it myself for my USB stick. Works great.

Thanks. I will follow the URL. If a w95 driver does not exist. Have you found the
w98 (and not w98SE) was able to straddle both OS's?

I'm not sure what you mean by "straddle both OSes". Could you elaborate, please?

The Win98 (First Edition) driver should work on Win95 OSR 2, yes. But I never got
to check it for myself.

The last OEM version of Windows 95 had very limited support for USB, as did 98 (first
edition). I was never happy with 98(first edition)'s USB support, due to some USB
devices being incompatible with others, even if the correct drivers for each were
installed. I guess that USB was still experimental in those days. So, I doubt that
win95 would be better, and might be worse. Further, today almost no one that makes
USB hardware provides USB 1.1 type drivers. All seem to require win98SE or higher.
Thus, if USB is essential to you, consider upgrading to 98SE. It should also be
more stable than win95. with XP over half a decade old, and Vista released this
year, I would guess that win98 CDs should be fairly common in the used software market.
