i have an alience computer with a packard bell system installation with windows 98 and just recently i have been having problems with windows booting. i have been told that there is no xms driver installed and windows won't boot without restarting computer 5 or 6 times and it will only start in safe mode and then if i shut down and start up again the windows starts up fine but all the while there are lines thru the screen. ive tried to check the ram memory cards which i have 5 of them without success as to whether this is causing the prob.

Hi Dale.

First of all this is the Win95 forum, you should have posted in Win98.

I'm not sure about the xms driver I don't think I use them but your himem.sys should
be loaded from your Config.sys.

My Config.sys.

DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE
DOS=HIGH,UMB
DEVICEHIGH=C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\display.sys con=(ega,,1)
Country=044,437,C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\country.sys

044,437 is the English keyboard but its not necessary.

Make sure you have Himem.sys and Emm386.exe are in your Windows folder.

You can start the comp up in Safe Mode and use NotePad or type Edit C:\Config.sys
in DOS.

As for the lines on your screen I would first update your video drivers to eliminate
those.

HI Keith, thanx 4 the reply. my pc is an old one and i know that this is a windows 95 forum but windows 98 is just an upgrade from 95 isn't it? I will try your solution and see what happens. But it seems like I got the lines thru the screen at the very same time that the pc would only start in safe mode if i did get it to start and the xms driver error came up. the xms driver has another name which i can't remember at this time. But after doin a little research i found that the problem could be a faulty ram card. I have 6 of them. But thanx for your reply.
