Hi Igor:

Check the time stamp on the
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.DA0
file.

It's a hidden file, but it can be checked in
a DOS box while Windows is still running if you
change the ATTRIBUTES to
-r -a -s -h

If you meant
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.DAT
instead of what you wrote then sharp idea but on my 98 box that I'm using right now I see it's only a couple minutes older than right now and I've been on for several hours.

So I took a look around and found
C:\WINDOWS\NDISLOG.TXT
which is zero byte file with the proper boot up time. Anybody else got this one that we could use to find/figure total ON time? More importantly, anybody NOT have it which would break a universal batch file approach to the problem?

Hi Lee:

I meant
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.DA0
(the last character is a zero).

I don't know how it works in Win98, but in
Win95, SYSTEM.DA0 and USER.DA0 are created at each
successful bootup. SYSTEM.DAT and USER.DAT are
updated continually as you go through the day
using Windows, but SYSTEM.DA0 and USER.DA0 are
not, and their time stamps should show the last
time Windows was loaded successfully. Compare
that time with the current time, and you'll know
how long this instance of Windows has been
running.

When I was using Win95 I put my SYSTEM.DAT and USER.DAT in a backup folder. So if I had any problems with Windows not starting I used to go into DOS and use Dosshell to put my backup files back. If Win95 didn't startup then you would normally get an error message and that would rename and put SYSTEM.DA0 and USER.DA0 back in the Windows folder. SYSTEM.DA0 and USER.DA0 are Win95's backup.
