USB Flash Drive (Nathan Lineback) driver help

Hi all, I am currently trying to use an older 200Mhz Windows 95 (C version) system to acquire and transfer high speed video. Unfortunately a newer system is not available to me and upgrading has large risks as the drivers for the acquisition system were made specifically for this version of windows. Anyway, the current method of getting these videos off of the computer is to burn a CD using a SCSI drive. The computer has USB ports built in and I would prefer to use a flash drive to transfer the files if possible. The basic drivers have been loaded to use USB which are displayed in the device manager as follows: Intel 82371SB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller USB Root Hub What I've done so far is unzipped the files onto a CD and tranferred the four files that Lineback has into the following path: C:\flashdisk I have tried right clicking the two .ini files and then clicking "Install" followed by inserting USB flash drives of various size and format into the port (one SanDisk Cruzer Mini 1GB (FAT32), a generic 512 MB with FAT32, and a 32MB with FAT formatting). When I insert the various devices, the 1GB device appears to load normally except it shows up as "Unknown Device" in the device manager. The other two drives initiates the load drivers window, but any time I've tried to point those (including the SanDisk one when using other loading methods) to the C:\flashdisk directory, it does not recognize those as drivers. I have also tried to force the "Unknown Device" to be recognized as a removable drive, but that fails. I've tried installing the .ini then restarting before putting the flash drives in, I've tried inserting the flash drives before and after do the above installation method including rebooting with the flash drives inserted. I have manually uninstalled from the device manager the "Unknown Device" and physically deleted the drivers from the hard drive several times to make sure its a fresh install before starting over. Does anyone see anything wrong with my methodology? I have only used Windows 95 a little bit in the past and am not all that familiar with the way it handles drivers and perhaps I'm missing something simple. All suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, EricW

I suggest contacting Nathan about this. It's possible that the driver doesn't have the pin numbers of your flash sticks, which causes the driver to not be recognised for it.

Only Win 95B would possibly work (and only if specifically stated as being supported)
and IME, all of the flash drives I have worked with require WIN 98 SE as the minimum,
and that is quickly disappearing in favor of W2K and XP or later. Few are supporting
even Win 98 now...

Flash sticks all use the same standard. This "supported on" is bogus info. This is why Nathan Lineback's driver works even for most of today's flash sticks, even though it was designed for Windows 95. When it doesn't work, it's because the driver doesn't recognise the PIN number, and refuses to work with it.

Eric, did you ever solve the problem? The 1st time I tried using Nathan's USB hack my Dell 4100 wouldn't recognize a Micro Advantage 128MB USB1 flash yet it quickly recognized a Memorex 2GB USB2 flash. However when I tried using Nathan's software on all my other Win95 PC's/partitions they all recognized both flash units, now all my Win95 PC's use the flash drives. It would be worth knowing if some flash drives are a problem so I can avoid buying them as many of the older types are on sale now to make way for the new "Vista ReadyBoost" flash drives, might be a good time to get some deal$ on older style flash drives! Also worth noting, I have access to a local college campus and find that my Micro flash will not work on the front USB ports of some of the PC's at the campus. I need to use the rear mounted USB ports instead. I see an obvious physical difference between the USB1 & USB2 drives I just mentioned. I assume this is the only reason I had a problem at 1st getting the Micro to work, perhaps it needed to be seated better on my PC, as it can't insert as deep as the USB2 drive does. But it will not work on the front USB ports of newer PC's. So if anyone finds they have a problem w/one flash, try another model. BTW, I didn't try to load the .ini's 1st, I plugged the flash in and when asked for the software needed to use the new device, I pointed it to the directory w/the files, loaded w/o a problem. (Was the .ini install rt click part of a Win PwrToys, Tweeks or such group? I can't remember how to do this on the new HD I just set up for Win 95) Recently I also tried loading a USB mouse but so far have no had success with the one I have, missing too many files like mouhid.vxd but I'll keep trying to get a USB mouse to work on Win95 if it's possible. If anyone has gotten a USB mouse to work on Win95 please post the info! - FYI for those who do not know about using a USB flash w/Win95 - http://toastytech.com/files/cruzerwin95.html - Louis

Louis, I never got the USB flash drives to work on this system. I ended up putting in a network card and borrowing a laptop to transfer the files as Nathan suggested in a PM. Beyond the two flash drives I tried, I used an SD card in a generic USB reader, but that also did not work. The detect and install route did not work for me for some reason. I suspect that some of the specialized video hardware that I required was interfering with the USB interrupts, but I never attempted to track that down as that hardware is what I needed to use this system. Sorry, but I don't know about the mouse issue. Thanks
