IE & Firefox Crash

Dusted off an old Dell laptop with Win95 a couple of weeks ago. Put in a patch or
two, tried to update IE to IE5, etc. Somehow, I broke something. Tried to go back
to IE4. No doubt a mistake.

Now, I get an error when opening IE4: the infamous "This program has performed an
illegal operation and will be shut down." Clicking on Details tells me "IEXPLORE
caused an exception 6d007fH in module KERNEL32.dll at 0137:bff9a3c0."

I then installed Firefox. Similar type of crash: "FIREFOX caused an invalid page
fault in module KERNEL32.dll at 0137:bff7aaca."

Does anyone have any suggestions on what I need to do? Thanks.

It could be something wrong with both of your browsers reading page scripts. Or it could be the Kernel32.dll driver. Try one more web browser e.g. Opera or Netscape Navigator, and if that doesn't work, try getting a new Kernel32.dll. I.E. off another computer. (keep a backup of your original just in case). Windows will probably delete most of the information and start creating its own inside the driver, if that works, you know it was the kernel32.dll

Hi Sixeye:

If nothing else works, you can always remove ALL
versions of Internet Explorer with IEradicator:
http://www.litepc.com/download.html

Then, you can install whichever version of
IE you like. Win95 will run up to IE 5.5.
Complete IE versions available here:
http://browsers.evolt.org/?

Thanks Aidan,

It seems awfully unlikely to me that both IE and Firefox are having the same paging
problem. Therefore, I think it must be Kernel32.dll having the problem, based on
what you have suggested. The laptop is the only computer I have access to with Win95
on it. I assume that I cannot use Kernel32.dll from a different version of Windows,
correct?

Thanks very much, Jerry. Since Firefox is having virtually the same problem, it seems
unlikely to me that IE is the problem. Don't you agree?

Good to know though that Win95 is limited to IE5.5. I do seem to remember reading
that a long time ago now that you mention it.

Just as a test, you might try some of the other
browsers that don't rely on any IE components:

The most basic is Off-By-One. It doesn't even
have to be "installed." Just run the EXE file.
It even runs from a floppy:
http://offbyone.com/offbyone/

And there's OPERA:
http://www.opera.com/download/

Thanks, that browser does work! That will get me by but if anyone has any suggestions
on how to repair Win95 or IE, whichever is my problem...

Another clue:
I tried to install free AVG (anti-virus). During the install, it errors out with
"The AVBSETUP.EXE file is linked to missing export OLE32.DLL:CoGetObject". It also
says in another window "avgsetup.exe A device attached to the system is not
functioning."

A long time ago, I remember trying AVG Anti-Virus
on my Win95. I recall that I couldn't get it to install
properly unless I had previously installed the "DCOM95"
upgrade from Microsoft.

Thanks, DCOM95 fixed IE for me, but not AVG. I got a new error. It also did not
fix Firefox. The error with AVG during install is: "Dialog with id "WinsockDlg"
was not found in the set up." It gets a whole lot further into the install before
reaching this error. Tried re-installing Firefox but no go. Not sure what to do
next. I'd really like to get AVG installed. Firefox would be a nice-to-have.

Winsock, eh?

Have you ever installed the Winsock2 upgrade on this
computer?

It used to be a free download from Microsoft, but
I see they've taken it down. I found another source
here:
http://ftp.unb.br/pub/windows/win95/

It's got the same size and MD5 hash as the original
I got from the old Microsoft page, so I'm sure it's good.

Late addition:

Microsoft still has Winsock2 available for download --
they just moved the page:

So you never had DCOM95 installed? I'm surprised Firefox even ran for a while without it, it shouldn't even open. If you're trying to use Firefox 2, know that it doesn't work properly on Windows 95. Firefox 1.5 will, though, as will the latest SeaMonkey (of which 1.1.x is based on the same code as Firefox 2).

No, Firefox never ran for me. I see now that the problem was I had installed v2.
Uninstalled that and installed v1.5 and voila! Thanks!

Tabbed browsing was the nice-to-have on Win95!

Okay but I do not have the folder referred to nor the bat file referred to in that
article. What now?

Never mind, that part of the article was if Winsock 2 was already installed. Doh.

I went ahead and installed it and all is well now. AVG now works.

Looks like I am good now. Next up is to find a wireless card that will work on Win95.

How to download WinsockDlg

I cannot install AVG 7.5 because WinsockDlg is not in the setup.
