Msdos 6.22 machine, new type motherboard with pc100 mem. NIc card installed with
Microsoft Network-Client 3.0 in dos. another machine with windows xp pro. how can
i connect threw the ethernet from the xp machine to see files on the dos machine.
cross over cable? normal cable? also how can i change the out put print in dos to
go threw the ethernet to save to file on the xp machine. I have done research on
this and have not come up with much. all the other connections serial and paralell
on the xp machine are filled already. to add more to this i have a old dos program
and need to get the out put of the print funtion to save to file, either on the xp
or have xp see the file saved on the mdsod 6.22 hard drive to access and print from
the xp. The program will not work on an xp machine no matter how much i adjust mem
and setting.

Hi Mike:
Can you "Print to File" on the DOS machine? Can you
take that file on a floppy disk to your XP machine and
print it from a DOS box with the command
COPY testfile.prn PRN

That is one of the ideas i am trying but i dont know what to change in the prtn.exe
on dos machine to make print to file or a: or where ever happen. (( make this more
clear the info is being sent from a program that can not be exited, i go to a choice
and print and it send it I am guessing to the print.exe which sends it to the print
port)) This what most sites say to type in /d:device /b:size /u:ticks1 /m:ticks2
/s:ticks3 /q:size /t i dont know the ticks of the file if i could find this in
the print.exe file then i am wondering if i change the device to a: if it would print
to a:
Searching for what to type in the print.exe file to make the info go to a file.
Im sure this fairly easy i just need a little something from a dos person to fill
in the gaps missing

Hi Mike:
Try this:
Download PRN2FILE.ZIP, unzip it, and put the
PRN2FILE.COM file on your DOS machine somewhere
"on the path" so all your programs can get to it.
http://www.geocities.com/DOSPrint/prn2file.zip
Type this command:
PRN2FILE c:\report.prn
Now start your DOS application and print out the
reports in the usual way. The printer won't
print, but all the output will be directed to the
new "C:\REPORT.PRN" file.
If the target file is not removed, additional
reports will be appended to any existing target
file.
This version of PRN2FILE (there are others
floating around) has no facility for "unloading"
itself. Reboot your DOS computer to reconnect the
regular printer.
Now, take the C:\REPORT.PRN file on a floppy disk
to your XP computer and print it from a DOS box:
COPY A:\REPORT.PRN PRN

Wow thank you Jerry, if this was for me then i would do that everytime.... but I
need to make this a little more simple, target user is 70 year old and the program
prints or dos prints to a dot matrix printer or older type printer as you probably
knew and the need to get away from them. I have to travle to get to the place to
work on the system so i would like to get as much info as i can before going again.
now i can input a code to start the program as soon as the pc starts up so it
doesnt just go to c: it loads c:my prgram... so i am thinking i can put this
c:\report.prn
or somthing like it into the same .bat file that I put in the program to automaticly
load up. also if i got the dosprnt to print to a file on drive c: i should beable
to see it threw windows xp as a file threw the NIC and move it over then print .?
Sorry i have looked threw these prgrams and most the print files is you run it on
a windows machine not a straight dos machine but this prnt2file looks to be just
dos. thanks jerry

Hi Mike:
The PRN2FILE stuff can be added to
AUTOEXEC.BAT
so it starts up automatically on the DOS
machine.
I have NO experience with networking DOS machines,
so my tests have all been limited to transporting
the REPORT.PRN file on a floppy between my (real)
DOS machine and a WindowsXP machine. But, it all
worked for me when I tested it tonight.
Good luck.
Jerry
