Air Cards

Hello fellow Windows 95 users,
It is that time again, where I tell you some more things that Windows 95 can do that
will keep it playing in today's game.
If you have been a long time user of Air-Cards made by various companies like Sierra
and Verizon, you no doubt remember the old CDPD protocol that cards used to use in
the 1990s and early 2000's.
Of course, these cards were designed for Windows 95 computers and users had no problems
buying service and support. However, CDPD has long since been scrapped. This means
that if you own a CDPD air card and would like to get it up and running again, bad
news--there are no more service providers available.
Does this mean that Windows 95 can no longer connect wirelessly to the Internet without
a router nearby? Of course Not!
Today, people on the road who use Windows XP or Vista use a different type of Air-Card.
Yes, they still are called Air-Cards but the protocol is NOT CDPD. Instead, these
users connect to the Internet through the CDMA protocol. A service that is widely
used throughout the United States and Canada.
The great news is that there are CDMA Air-Cards that support Windows 95!
I'd like to share the Sierra Air-Card 555 for example. All I have to do is stick
the card into its PCMCIA slot on the side of my computer, double click the connection
program and voila! I am connected to the Internet. This works anywhere I get cell
phone service.
In fact, I am connected through this card right now!
Internet surfing is pretty fast. Downloads however, lag and I get the feeling that
Verizon kind of discourages downloading.
I have to pay 59.99 a month but that is expected with most services since you can
get Internet access on top of a mountain if you wanted to.
If you go out and do your own shopping, try not to ask for help. Service personelle
might stick their noses up when you say "yeah....for Windows 95". Then they immediately
assume that Windows 95 isn't supported.
So, don't bother asking for help but do your own research as to what Air-Card to
buy and MAKE SURE it is Windows 95 compatible. There are Air-Cards that DO NOT support
Windows 95. There is nothing worse than waiting a week for a piece of hardware and
finding out that when you get it...it doesn't work.
But persevere because it's out there! Trust me!
Windows 95 is not dead yet, and it'll never be if I can help it!
Happy Computing and Much Luck!
