Won't recognize PS/2 Serial Mouse

I've just received a system with win95 already installed. When I boot I get an error saying PS/2 Serial Mouse not installed. Shut down and install. I've navigated with the key board (no mean feat) to the System...Device...Mouse and removed the mouse altoghether. Re-boot then use the Hardware installer to let Mr. Gate's thingy do its stuff. When the system re-starts from here it still does not recognize the mouse (and it won't work) however, when I examine the System...Device...Mouse it shows it has installed drivers (vmouse.vxd and mouse.drv). Short of switching port cable can anyone PLEASE offer any suggestions. With thanks, Bill

Have you tried another mouse? Maybe yours is dead. Is it properly plugged in? Is it a regular mouse or is it some kind of special mouse like a wheel mouse etc: though the basic funcions should work anyway.
