Question about 'How do I stop a program from running whenever I start Windows?'

I have a question about How do I stop a program from running whenever I start Windows?:

somehow i have gotten something called "jethomepage" to load along with my excite homepage everytime i turn off and logged back on the internet! this "homepage" appears when i first log back on and comes on the left hand side of my screen. i have tried everything from searching my registry to looking for it manualling through each file and i cannot find it to get rid of it (i even went to the real homepage and tried to find someway of uninstalling it there but with no luck!)! once it is there and i "x" it out it never returns again until i reboot but it is just a major annoyance to even look at. can someone please help me out with a suggestion of how i can get rid of this damn thing once and for all?! many thanks...

Try Start, Run, type msconfig...hopefully it will run, and you can turn off startup programs from there...I think..

1st, right click the IE icon and delete history and temporary internet files. If that doesn't work you can search the registry for the url of the home page it brings up and delete it. It would be in HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Internet Explorer\Main as a "Default" string value. Or, you can try restoring IE defaults by right clicking the IE icon , then click properties, and then click programs, and reset defaults. Uncheck "reset my homepage" if the home page setting in IE is correct. Or, run regedit and see if it is in the "run" key in HKCU and/or HKLM in Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current version\Run and delete it there. One of these should do it

Personally I use a free program called Startup Cop. It shows you everything you could want to know about what starts with windows. A nice feature is "Disable". This allows you to stop the selected program from loading but still allows you to undo this should it cause any problems. I believe I downloaded it at CNET or ZD. It may be called "Start Cop". Just run a search for startup programs if you can't find it. Good Luck!!!

They listed some pretty good solutions, but there are a few
more spots where a program can start at bootup that I know
of; Here is my little memory list so I do not forget one of them.

   0. sector 0 of the boot drive This one does not count except
for things like BOOTMAGIC which is a excellent program and
       nasty things like viruses.

   1. c:\config.sys

   2. c:\autoexec.bat

   3. c:\windows\winstart.bat This program file may or may not
exist on your machine, but it will start things on bootup.

   4. windows registry
       HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\current
                          version\run...

   5. c:\windows\system.ini

   6. c:\windows\win.ini

   7. windows startup menu c:\windows\startmenu\programs\StartUp\*.lnk

   8. Task Scheduler (on system tray) c:\windows\system\mstinit.exe
(I think this is right) If you have a scheduler program installed
       check it's listings

   9. c:\progra~1\icq\ndedit.exe c:\progra~1\icq\agent\ndedit.exe
If you ever install ICQ it likes to install it's netdetect program
in the regestry. ICQ does not give you a way to totaly kill the
program. So I took it's listing out of the registry.

You viewed a virus infected web page. See http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/analyses/trojjethome.html I recommend obtaining antivirus software, then scanning and cleaning your system.

I had the same problem you had. I found the culprit to the problem you had by looking for a file called sp.dll in the winnt directory. It loads on startup. You can unselected by running msconfig in run... and clicking on the startup tab. You can always edit it with notepad too.

Jethomepage is an unethical organization who wants to hijack your
browser and take you to their site. They think we will just be
nice and go along like sheep.

They insert a key into your registry under
localmachine/software/microsoft/windows/currentversion/run
the key name is sp, and the value is
regedit -s c:\Windows\sp.reg
DELETE THIS KEY.
You can also delete sp.reg and sp.dll from your Windows folder.

The effect of their little trick is to reset the registry each time
you startup or logon, and keep their shabby little search page in
your face. The effect of their registry settings, at least in my
case, was to open their rotten little search window as a lefthand
panel in MSIE, then maximize my browser and goof up my toolbars.
Deleting the key stops the program from running upon startup/logon.

try my startright program. it tells you what all is starting up when you turn on your computer, and give you the option of stopping some of them.

Thanks! I've been getting "can't find sp.reg" every time I boot my computer, and I wondered whether I was missing something important (at about the same time, some other things started acting wrong.) Glad to hear it's just a **** nuisance and I can delete the registry entry.

After screwing around w/ this tinybar/jetseeker BS for the better part of the last two days, we found the solution. We found that some extra steps beyond those already suggested are needed (or perhaps just our steps alone will suffice – hard to tell since we were trying everything we could). Begin by finding mshta.exe in the Processes tab of the Windows Task Manager, and kill it. Then, kill the file C:\systemsearch.hta, and any reference to it and/or to “systemsearch” in your registry (or if you wish, look at the .hta file first in wordpad, and you’ll see that it’s a script w/ text that matches up w/ the crap that appears in the tinybar). You may also want to clear out your temporary internet files and reset Web settings in IE to prevent re-infection. Good Luck!

Startup Cop is not at CNET or ZD. Go to Google and search. Also it is not free, they want 19.95. I did a download but it didn't even run. Email I sent them is pending. I still have 2 dial-up connections poping up every time I boot and have yet to find how to stop them.
