Screen Resize always resets on reboot

I have recently reinstalled Win98 SE on my laptop. I can resize the screen. After a reboot it always resets to 800x600. This happens either with an attached monitor or with the laptop's own screen. If I select the option to restart the computer after resize, it will come up correctly after the reboot, and then revert to 800x600 on the subsequent reboot. The setting for colour (256, vs 16 bit vs 24 bit) is always retained correctly. I have looked in many places, but can't find any references to this problem. Any help here would be VERY much appreciated. TIA Steve
