The Boot Up screen is handled in the BIOS. You need to run "setup" when the machine 
is first started. BIOS's
can vary but you should find a setting under "BOOT" with something like "show diagnostics" 
which will show 
xxx MB SYSTEM RAM PASSED
KEYBOARD DETECTED
MOUSE DETECTED
DRIVE 0
DRIVE 1   ETC...

Much more informative than  "DUH DELL"
