Gene: the beep sounds (no pun) like a clue. Disable your exit sound in Control Panel>Sound
icon>Properties>click "Exit Windows Sound event">in the Name field, select "None".
For more tweaks see my post to Rob at r1005615210 (use the QuickLink after your
text below). I have also found that the shutdown is faster and smoother if you disable
your firewall just before you click the Shutdown button.
