I don't know if this wil help, but here is the instructions for using the recovery
disk when replacing a hard drive (this pertains to an HP computer when replacing
a hard drive):Disconnect all devices from the computer except for the monitor,
mouse, and keyboard.
With the new hard drive in place, turn the computer on and insert the first disc
of the HP Pavilion System Recovery Kit into the top CD or DVD drive.
Restart the computer and click past the first recovery introduction screen.
On the main recovery screen click Advanced Options then select Exit to DOS from the
drop-down menu.
Type FDISK at the prompt and press ENTER.
Press Y, if not already entered, and press ENTER to enable large disk support. Press
Y again if a screen comes up asking for large NTFS support.
Type 1, if not already entered, and press ENTER to create the DOS partition or logical
DOS drive.
Type 1, if not already entered, and press ENTER to create a primary DOS partition.
The system begins to verify the drive integrity. If the hard drive does not appear
in the list, then turn the computer off, verify the jumper settings for the hard
drive and the cable connections to the drive and to the motherboard, and restart
again from step 3.
Type Y, if not already entered, and press ENTER to use the maximum available size
for the primary DOS partition and make the partition active. The system continues
verifying the drive integrity.
Press ESC to restart your system so that the changes take effect. After restarting,
you will need to format the hard drive.
Turn off the computer and wait approximately five seconds before continuing to the
next section. The following steps will restore all data to the new hard drive.
Turn on the computer with the first recovery disc in the top CD or DVD drive.
The system will begin formatting if the drive has not been formatted yet. It can
take approximately 20 to 30 minutes to format the hard drive.
The Welcome to HP Pavilion Recovery CD screen appears. Press any key to continue.
Click OK to restore the hard drive.
Click Recover to recover all the software originally included with your system.
Click Yes on the confirmation window. It takes over 20 minutes to recover the hard
drive.
Stay near to the computer while the recovery process runs. If there are more than
two recovery discs, then the computer will ask for another disc to be inserted during
the install.
When finished, remove the disc(s) and click OK. Answer any questions to any screens
that appear and read all screens carefully. Restart the computer when prompted.
