Now windows just begins to start and then shuts down without any warning.

two possibilities:

1) wininit.exe is missing or damaged.
2) vmm32.vxd is missing or damaged.

if it's the former, simply replacing the file should fix it. if it's the latter, an over the top install if the operating system should do it (no data loss, normally).
