Another solution: Before defragging, hit ctrl+alt+delete to open up task manager. End all tasks (one by one) until the only tasks running are "explorer" and "systray". Doing this shuts down all apps running in the background, leaving only essential Win98 processes active. Also be sure to disable your screensaver. Should do the trick. Also, avoid using the disk defragmenter bundled with Norton Utilities or SystemWorks. Norton takes less time to defrag, but that's only because it doesn't do a very good job of defragging. After using Norton defragger for a while & switching back to the Win98 defragger, I could see that Norton didn't do what it was supposed to do - data was spread out all over the disk! It took the Windows defragger forever to fix, but when it was done, performance had improved fairly significantly compared with the Norton defragger.
