Richard: Thank you! I ran Defrag in Safe Mode and it worked fine! I did have to disable
the
screen saver because the process kept starting over again. Just as an aside, I am
new to
Win98. When I got it I found under System Tools a "handy" maintenance scheduler,
which I
set up to let the computer run scan disk every week. All this time I thought it was
running
scan disk every week, but now I doubt that it has been. I ran scandisk in Safe Mode
and it
took seven hours. So I have totally disabled the "handy" maintenance tool, and will
run the
procedures myself, often. Thank you again for your help. Susan W. Simpson
