This is the bit where your error is. Dividing by 2 gives you:
(x squared) / 2 + x = 12
Not that that helps particularly.
solution (Using Quadratic formula):
x squared + 2x - 24 = 0
x = (-2 +- sq. rt. ((2*2) + (4 * 1 * 24))) / 2
x = (-2 +- sq. rt. (100)) / 2
x = (-2 +- 10) / 2
2 solutions: x = 4, x = -6.
Also, ...
x squared + 2x - 24 = 0
reduces to,
(x - 4)(x + 6) = 0
therefore yielding 2 solutions : x = 4 or x = 6.
