Help w/ network problems please

Hi, I'm having trouble with a computer on my new home network(1 PC running Win98,
the other running Win2k Pro., the problem is with the Win98 Machine so I posted in
this forum). I've tried removing and reinstalling TCP/IP in network properties,
but nothing seems to help. I am using a D-link network switch and a Linksys Cable/DSL
router to share my cable connection with my network. All connections are correct,
and I've switched cables to be sure it isn't just a bad patch cable, and tried switching
ports on the hub/switch and still had no luck. The link lights on the network switch
and NIC for the computer in question(Win98) are intermittent, while the ones for
the other computer(Win2k Pro)and the router are both constantly on or blinking in
unison with network activity. The Win98 machine can intermittently see the Win2k
machine in network neigborhood, and vice-versa, but the Win98 box can't find the
router, while the other comp. can, and the same holds true with internet access(I'm
typing this message from the Win2k machine because the Win98 one won't connect)
I've had a problem similar to this before I had the network, and I ended up reinstalling
the networking components for Win98 from the install CD, problem is that I can't
remember which CAB files contain them. Does anyone here have any ideas? I was previously
considering upgrading to WinXP on my Win98 machine, does anyone think this would
help/solve the problem (I'm sure WinXP probably has new networking components that
would install over the Win98 ones) Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Don
