I think you may have an "overly hardwared" problem. Your LinkSys Cable/DSL Router
will eliminate the need for another hub or switch unless you are networking more
than four computers. Connect the output of your cable modem to the input of the router
and the computers to any of the output ports of the router. Be sure to power everything
down before changing the connections. Follow the instructions that came with your
router to power up and reset your router and network. If you are worried about missing
network files, simply remove all installed networking components and restart your
computer. Then reinstall them. If necessary direct to C:/Windows/Options/Cabs or
your Windows 98 disk.
As far as XP is concerned, it has a "Network Setup Wizard" which I have found to
work very well. However,I don't think you need to spend the $100 to solve your problem.
Follow the instructions packaged with your LinkSys Router and be sure to take advantage
of its DHCP sever capabilities. Good Luck!
