I have a question about Getting
Network Neighborhood to recognize newly attached computers:
Here's the issue. I had a fully operational network running between a laptop and
a desktop. Win 98 SE on the laptop and Win 98 on the desktop. I have a netgear
RT 314 router,
and Norton Internet Security. Using the Router both my machines talk to the internet,
and too each other. I do not use the desktop to share it's connection. The cable
modem is hooked in
directly to the router. The other day I went onto windows update and attempted to
upload their criticial update package
to the laptop. This upload caused "lexplore" in windows to crash, thus not allowing
me to use windows at all. I reinstalled windows on the desktop. I then reinstalled
a correct working
version of the critical update package. I also installed the critical update package
on my desktop. The network no longer works. Both computers have no problem accessing
the internet.
In Network Neighborhood, the desktop sees both itself and the laptop, but the laptop
doesn't see itself or the desktop. The firewalls are both set to know that the computers
are safe for
each other to see. I have it set for "Windows Logon" so that I don't need to logon
in boot up. Using find the laptop does see the desktop. Everything appears to be
set up properly.
File sharing is on, print sharing is on. But the laptop still can't see anything.
What the heck is going on?????
