I was having a similiar problem with my system and I found a solution to my problem.
My problem was, that I was running the latest PHP and Apache on my win98 box. PHP
instructed me to throw its DLL's all around the Windows/system directory etc. I
thought I'd be smart, and simply add ALL the sub-folders into the PATH statement
into my Autoexec.bat.
Didn't think anything about it...next time I rebooted (day later) I got the Windows
Protection errors...
Solution: Commented the path statements out...and voila. If you are having problems
with Mcafee, my solution would be to uninstall the program and MAKE sure that it
is commented out (use REM in front of the command) completely of your autoexec.bat
and config.sys.
