After reformatting my computer, I experienced the same problem. I tried holding down
"shift" when clicking "shutdown," I tried hitting "enter" during the freeze window
to wake it up, I tried jigging with the sound files.
Eventually, I unistalled Tiny Personal Firewall, which was something new I tried
using after reformatting my computer.
After uninstalling it, I tried shutting down the computer, with no change, it still
froze. However, once I rebooted my system, I tried restarting, this time it worked,
once it fully loaded, I tried shutting down, and that worked. So, it would appear
that (a) the firewall was the problem, and (b) it took one full rotation of shutting
down before all of the changes took effect.
Everything is fine now, so I'm off to try downloading another copy of this firewall
and try it again.
