System crashes if not connected to Internet

Hi, I have this strange problem where Win 98 crashes if I'm not connected to the internet (modem connection) so as soon as I start up I have to connect otherwise within a few minutes I'll get a blue screen or it will automatically restart and hang. If I'm connected it runs fine for hours. I've stripped down all my start up programs to the bare minimum but this hasn't fixed it. Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks.
