I have a question (or ten) about Can't
access some websites while using a shared PPPoE connection:
PROBLEM(S):
- General Overview -
Having performed the ICS setup directions as laid out
in http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/ics_98
1. I am having problems implementing this particular
solution (of changing MTU values) to get a client
computer running Windows ME to reach Internet
sites via a Windows 98 SE LAN w/ Internet
Connection Sharing over a PPPoE connection.
The LAN seems to work fine (I am currently sharing
files between both computers) and my host computer
has Internet connectivity so I am ruling out problems
with the ISP/Internet connection and with the LAN.
However, when attempting to connect to websites on
the client computer, I get the "Page cannot be
displayed" message.
So I tried pinging one machine on the LAN from the
other, and vice versa, and both machines' pings to the
other results in Request timed out errors when
inputting MTU values of lower than around 1400 (1500
to around 1400 results in the fragmentation errors as
documented).
I can't seem to get a successful ping from either
computer to the other no matter how low an MTU
value I input.
2. I have also attempted to implement the solution
suggested on the Microsoft site
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q273587
but I am unable to do this either.
Specifically, my problem seems to be that I cannot
alter my Dial-Up Settings to "Always dial my default
connection" as specified in the above link, even though
the Microsoft page seems to take for granted that I
can.
I am reluctant to mess around with any of my other
settings (in some vain attempt to get Microsoft's
solution to work properly) since my host computer's
Internet access still works (for now) and my LAN still
works fine.
If anyone has any suggestions, or if they can see
some horrible newbie flaw in what I've been doing, I
would appreciate it.
My LAN setup is as follows:
- Internet Connection -
Bell Sympatico High-Speed Edition using EnterNet /
PPPoE (which uses an Efficient Networks SpeedStream
ADSL/Broadband modem connected to the host
machine's 3Com card)
- Host -
Intel Pentium III 933mhz
running Windows 98 Second Edition
3Com EtherLink 10/100 PCI using
Network TeleSystems P.P.P.o.E. Adapter (NTSP3)
AOpen 10/100mbps Fast EtherNet PCI Adapter
- Client -
Sony VAIO PCG-FX301 AMD Duron 800mhz
running Windows Millenium Edition
Realtek 8139-series PCI NIC
(which is connected to the host machine's AOpen card
via A-Link Mini Sized 5-Port 10/100M N-Way Switch)
- Cable -
RJ45 Male/Male Category 5e Patch Cables
(between client and hub, hub and host, ADSL modem
and host)
- Software -
all network cards installed properly (that I can tell)
Internet Connection Sharing running on host
- Firewall -
ZoneAlarm software running on the host machine
Norton SystemWorks running on the client machine
If there is any other information that is required
regarding my setup in order to troubleshoot my
problem, or if you need clarification on exactly what
my problem is, please let me know.
Thanks in advance.

NB. I only know enough to make me dangerous, so please be kind. ;)
