Hi, just to update and maybe help others in a similar situation:

The problem did indeed turn out to be related to enabling file sharing. I am used 
to Windows98 where you can right click a folder, click Sharing and modify your share 
properties. I did the same thing in Windows2000 and it doesn't work.

The following is required in Windows2000:
Open "My Computer"
Select the drive on which you want to enable sharing.
Right click and pick "Sharing"
A Sharing dialog box opens. At the bottom, pick New Share.
Enter a share name (no more than 12 characters)
Click the "Permissions" button to set permissions on any User Groups that you have 
previously defined. The User Groups should include the one with the username and 
password from the Windows98 machine.
Voila! My network is working.
