I experienced the same problem. I tried re-installing the drivers from the maufacturers
disk but got nowhere. After realizing that in safe mode the CD drives are disabled
I copied the display drivers from the manufacturer’s disk to a new folder on the
desktop.
Went to start>run and typed in dxdiag.exe to see how DirectX was holding up. After
clicking the ‘display’ tab, I was told that Direct3D acceleration was ‘not available’
and a note at the bottom said that a particular driver file had not been digitally
signed(?).
So I downloaded that file and replaced the original in the desktop folder with it.
Then did the usual right-click My Computer>Properties>Device Manager, opened display
adapters, properties on the driver inside, driver tab>Update Driver, etc. to let
it find and install the drivers in the desktop folder. Although I was told that
the drivers were now not the most appropriate, it fixed everything.
But I still don’t understand why the Windows picture on boot-up looked like it was
using all the colors but as soon as the desktop came up they had all been lost.
Or how the file on the CD could have become corrupt, if it did. Frustrating isn’t
the word.
