Hello Chris. I had this problem when I did a fresh install of IE6.0 just to test
IEradicator. My OS is in French and when I had finished I had menus partly in French
partly in English.
It seems as if when you use an English version of IE that you connect to the English
language up-date site, and if it is in French to the French up-date site. So if you
are using an English version of IE you will need to uninstall IE 'as I had to do)
and re-install in German. Then do all of your up-dates again.
To do this effectively you can either download the full IE6.0 into your download
area or get a copy on a CD-ROM from your ISP or a Computer Shop. (This is the better
option as you have a permanent copy; in case something goes wrong!) I safeguard myself
by running Opera 6.03 at the same time, and I consider this to be a better browser
anyway BUT there IS a problem when it comes to up-dating from MS so I use IE just
for up-dates.) (So download and install Opera 6.03 first so you can still get online.)
Then run IEradicator to remove ALL trace of IE6.0 AND IE 5.5 (except the IE 5.5 .cab
files which it cannot find, IF they are ON your HDD and not on a CD-ROM) When all
is clean you can check the registry with RegCleaner 4.3 from www.jv16.org , run CleanDisk,
ScanDisk and Defrag (you are using "new defrag" from Me? It is 10 times faster than
the one in '98) and then install IE6.0 and defrag again to bed the program in properly.
Then go to the German automatic Windows Up-Date site (which it ... should ... find
automatically, now that your IE is in German again) (It is already! I hope not!)
and fully up-date your system!
By the way, the www.microsoftupdates.com should be http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
and up-dates from here should install automatically in your language. I think you
might just have added an update manually from microsoft updates and that is it THAT
which caused the problem. So you might be able to do: C:\>scanreg /restore at the
DOS prompt and remove the up-date and then try again at the German Windows automatic
up-date site.
THE EASIEST way to read this is to cut and paste into a word processor. Besten! Iain.
Also try AdAware 5.83 from www.lavasoft.nu.
