Hey BoB, I borrowed this from Iain (with permission) This is a pretty concise list.
But start with what is it you have running from start-up? START >RUN type MSCONFIG
go to startup tab and see whats up. Something is eating up your resources. Perhaps
your Symatec config.? Perhaps your aol config?
http://housecall.antivirus.com/
And another from Symantec: www.symantec.com/avcenter
Try running AdAware 5.84+ from: www.lavasoft.nu ,
Pest Patrol from: www.safersite.com ,
SpyBot Search and Destroy from: http://beam.to/spybotsd , Click on English
flag.
Swat-It from: www.lockdowncorp.com/bots/downloadswatit.html and
RegCleaner 4.3 (NOT the Beta 1.1) from: www.jv16.org
Run an on-line security check from: www.symantec.com/avcenter ,
Configure your connection to protect your bios, etc.
AND use DEFRAG.EXE from ME to replace your defrag.exe, this is a must for
all using 9x!
Adding PowerDefrag from: www.e-technik.com if you are really having problems
defragmenting, etc.
Run Beta10 on ME (maybe now also for 9x) from www.beta10.com
For RAM memory assistance use: RAMpage 1.6 from:
www.jfitz.com/software/RAMpage/index.html
ALL FOR FREE!
