Niles , I hope you're still tracking this as I have found a solution to your
problem.
The instructions written at http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article04-107 are
indeed incorrect. The correct registry path is as follows: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\NetTrans\0000
The exact path may vary but just do a search for tcp/ip and include maxMTU=1454 in
every branch with a matching string..
