Andre: MS has removed support for the NetBEUI protocol from XP.

it is best if all of your computers have the exact same list of network protocols;
this means that a mixed 98/XP network should have the NetBEUI protocol removed from
the 98 computers.

you can rely on TCP/IP for your network, but if you wish, add the NWLink IPX/SPX
protocol to all of your computers by viewing the network properties on each computer;
click Add or Install, select Protocols, select NWLink IPX/SPX.

your configuration will have file sharing blocked by design by the XP computer for
security reasons;
if you know that your network internet connections have adequate firewall protection;
you can try to disable the ICF in XP.

it is essential that you have a firewall of some type in place.
for a DSL connection with multiple IP addresses and a router; configure packet filtering
in your router.
block TCP/UDP ports 137-139 and 445.
your ISP will help you do this.

for a cable connection with multiple IP addresses and no hardware firewall device
in place; you will be unable to share files on your LAN.
