I replaced shell32.dll from a backup (thanks Retrospect) and immediately got back
the "Light arrow" that I'd used TweakUI to set. Of course, you have to do it from
DOS, since Windows is using the dll when its running.
Anyway, I've kept the security update version of shell32.dll around in case I notice
any problems, but so far it looks good.
As far as the security aspects of MS replacing the dll, I can only speculate that
MS didn't want it calling possibly malicious code -- the "feature" that tweakui capitalizes
on to replace or remove the shortcut arrow.
Well, I've been running Win98 for several years without the security fix and I've
got an excellent firewall and virus software. I believe I'll take the risk...
