Question about 'How do I stop a program from running whenever I start Windows?'

When I go to the startup under msn config,n there is a whole pile of things that start up on boot...I don't even know what some of them are and I think this is why my pc takes so long to start up. Is there an easy way to determine what I need checked off and what I can uncheck, or is it just trial and error?
