There's a bit on the problem you describe (I had it too). It goes on to give details
on how to manually configure the 98 machine.
I now have my 2 machines networked (crossover cable, no hub), remember to allow the
IP addresses in any firewall software (30 mins took me to figure that out, doh!).
However still can't get 98 machine to share the Internet Connection on the XP machine.
