Hello-- A client brought her computer in with the exact error message that is being discussed here. Rather than extracting files and renaming files, I just booted with the startup floppy and then reinstalled Win98. Enter the key # and you can walk away, come back in 30 minutes or so and, at least in my case, be greeted by a computer running properly. Might not work in every instance, but it has a couple of times now for me. Good luck!
