Hello--
A client brought her computer in with the exact error message that is being discussed
here. Rather than extracting files and renaming files, I just booted with the startup
floppy and then reinstalled Win98. Enter the key # and you can walk away, come back
in 30 minutes or so and, at least in my case, be greeted by a computer running properly.
Might not work in every instance, but it has a couple of times now for me. Good luck!
